About the Design
Artists Inspiration for Design:
This apple was designed to honor the identity and heritage of the community by featuring the official seals of Unicoi County, the Town of Erwin, and the Town of Unicoi. Together, these emblems represent many of the defining features that make the area special—from the mountains and iconic fire tower associated with Unicoi, to the Nolichucky River winding through the scenic mountain landscape of Erwin.
The design also reflects the region’s rich history and the foundations on which the towns were built. The Valley Beautiful seal pays tribute to the railroad legacy that helped shape both Erwin and Unicoi beginning in the late 1800s, when trains first began rolling through the valley and supporting growth and industry.
Finally, the inclusion of the church symbolizes the strong faith-based roots of the community and honors the nearly 30 churches that serve the people of Erwin and Unicoi. Together, these elements create a meaningful tribute to the landscapes, traditions, and history that continue to define Unicoi County today.
Explore, Experience and Discover:
This apple celebrates the shared identity and proud history of Unicoi County, the Town of Erwin, and the Town of Unicoi—three entities that together shape the place visitors experience today. Featuring each official seal, the design represents the foundations of governance, community, and cooperation that have guided the area’s growth while preserving its character.
Unicoi County, established in 1875, is rooted in Appalachian heritage and a deep connection to the land. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, and forests, the county’s history is shaped by agriculture, railroads, and a strong sense of resilience. Today, Unicoi County continues to welcome visitors with outdoor adventure, cultural traditions, and a commitment to preserving the natural beauty that defines the region.
The Town of Erwin, founded as a railroad town in the late 1800s, grew alongside the Clinchfield Railroad and became a vital hub for commerce and community life. Its historic downtown remains the heart of activity, hosting festivals, events, local businesses, and public art. For many visitors, Erwin serves as the gateway to Unicoi County—offering both small-town charm and easy access to outdoor experiences.
The Town of Unicoi adds its own rich layer to the area’s story, reflecting the agricultural roots and close-knit spirit that continue to shape daily life. With a strong sense of local pride and community connection, the Town of Unicoi represents the quieter, authentic side of Appalachian living that many visitors seek when exploring the region.
Together, these seals symbolize unity, heritage, and shared purpose. By including them in the Apple Art Walk, this apple invites visitors to look beyond individual attractions and appreciate the communities that work together to create a welcoming destination—one built on history, cooperation, and a shared love for this corner of Tennessee.
