About the Design
Artist Bio:
Heathur Sawyer is a 38-year-old Erwin, Tennessee native who has spent the past decade rooted in the creative community of Johnson City. Though a lifelong artist, Heathur has been tattooing professionally for ten years and is the owner of Til Death Tattoo, located in Downtown Johnson City.
Her artistic background extends beyond tattooing; she previously served as an Elephant Artist for the town of Erwin, painting the elephant Vallou, a piece inspired by the colors and textures of Cash Family Pottery.
Heathur draws much of her creative inspiration from the surrounding Appalachian landscape—the mountains, forests, rivers, and natural beauty that define East Tennessee. In addition to tattoo, she creates abstract and pop-art pieces and enjoys working across a wide range of mediums, including mixed media, pottery, sculpting, and jewelry making. Her work blends personal expression, regional influence, and a continual exploration of evolving creative forms.
Artists Inspiration for Design:
This apple was inspired by a deeply personal connection to Unicoi County and the profound impact the community experienced during the devastating September 2024 flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. For the artist, Heathur, the project reflects both personal loss and collective resilience. Her father lost his lifelong home in the flood—a home that had belonged to her grandparents and held generations of family memories. Her other father experienced an equally devastating loss, as several close friends tragically lost their lives in the industrial district disaster. Their lives, relationships, and contributions to the community remain an enduring part of Erwin’s story.
Although Heathur no longer resides in Unicoi County, she felt an immediate responsibility to help. She organized multiple donation deliveries, partnered with Unicoi County High School, assisted with cleanup efforts, and responded directly to individuals in need. Witnessing the compassion, strength, and unity of the community during such a difficult time left a lasting impression on her.
Artistically, the design draws inspiration from Van Gogh’s Starry Night, depicting the river valley at night beneath a calm, celestial sky and surrounded by the mountains that define the area. The scene is meant to symbolize peace, resilience, and the enduring sense of comfort the valley provides—even in moments of great hardship. Through this work, Heathur hopes to offer a sense of calm to residents and visitors alike, while honoring the strength, spirit, and perseverance of Erwin’s people.
Explore, Experience and Discover:
Flowing through the heart of Unicoi County, the Nolichucky River is one of the region’s most iconic natural treasures. Carving its way through the breathtaking Nolichucky Gorge, the river is framed by towering cliffs, forested slopes, and sweeping mountain views that create a dramatic and unforgettable landscape. This striking natural corridor has shaped both the scenery and the outdoor lifestyle of the area, offering visitors an immersive Appalachian experience.
The Nolichucky River is best known for its whitewater rafting, featuring some of the most exciting and scenic rapids in the Southeast. The river’s journey through the gorge produces thrilling Class III and IV rapids, drawing adventure seekers from across the country. Guided rafting trips make it easy for visitors of all experience levels to safely experience the rush of the water while taking in the rugged beauty of the gorge from river level.
Beyond rafting, the river is a haven for kayaking, fishing, and leisurely floats. Anglers are drawn to its productive waters, while paddlers enjoy quieter stretches ideal for exploration and relaxation. Floating through the gorge offers a rare opportunity to experience its towering rock faces and natural beauty from a peaceful, up-close perspective.
More than just a recreation destination, the Nolichucky River and Gorge represent the adventurous spirit and natural beauty that define Unicoi County. They invite visitors to explore, unplug, and connect with the landscape—making the river a fitting inspiration for the Apple Art Walk and a must-see experience for anyone visiting the area.
